Infrared and Ultrasound a Match Made for Reliability and Safety

Roy Huff, Vice President, The Snell Group

Description

Infrared and ultrasound share a lot in common.  They are both extremely versatile in the number and types of the applications where they can be applied.  They are both important technologies in supporting condition-based maintenance programs.  Both have been proven to have incredible ROI.  And as the presentation will discuss they can both be utilized in combination to identify an even a greater number of failure modes and do it with added safety.
This presentation will provide the attendees with a better knowledge of applying these technologies to energize electrical equipment to identify more failure modes.  Fault types and case studies supporting these failure modes will be demonstrated or discussed.  And one additional benefit will be discussed, all of this can be accomplished with additional safety.

Takeaways

1. Types of electrical failure modes that each technology may detect
2. How to integrate the findings to improve electrical reliability
3. How to utilize these technologies to improve plant and technician safety

Bio

As vice president, Roy oversees the technical content of both condition-based maintenance and monitoring (CBM) and nondestructive testing (NDT) infrared applications. In support of CBM in addition to training curriculum, Roy manages program audits/assessments, technician mentoring, program development and consulting services offered by The Snell Group. For NDT programs and applications Roy supports employer-based certification by providing training, testing and level 3 consulting services, including responsible level 3 and outside agency.
An Electrical Engineer who in 1996 received and continues to maintain Thermal/Infrared Thermography Level III certificate from the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), Certificate #81115. Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) by the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) since 2003. NAS 410 Revision 4 Level 3 since 2010.
With over 35 years of experience in infrared, electric motor testing and ultrasound (passive and active) and a professional background in reliability engineering, Roy’s strengths in management and program development have been a tremendous asset to The Snell Group. And with experience with flash, pulse, vibroacoustic, induction, active, and passive infrared NDT methods, Roy is uniquely qualified to support aerospace infrared programs.
Past experience as a staff equipment engineer with Allied Signal Aerospace and as an engineer and principal of a midwestern predictive maintenance company, Roy has the experience to support all types of projects. For example, he recently supported The Snell Groups rewrite and update of the EPRI Thermography Guide.
